Dog Birthday Cake Recipe | It Doesn’t Taste Like Chicken

This dog birthday cake is soft, simple, and made with wholesome, dog-friendly ingredients. Naturally sweetened with banana and topped with a creamy peanut butter frosting, it’s perfect for birthdays, adoptaversaries, or celebrating your pup!

A dog’s birthday is a pretty big deal, if you ask me. (Or adoptiversary, which is what we celebrate for my rescue dog, Chickpea.) We actually made this cake for her 10th adoptiversary (how has it already been ten years?!), and judging by the speed she inhaled her slice, I’d call it a success.

This dog birthday cake is one of my favorite ways to spoil my Chickpea dog because she absolutely loves homemade treats. Not only is it more affordable than ordering a fancy dog bakery cake, it’s also made with wholesome ingredients like banana, oat flour, and natural peanut butter.

Chickpea has become my official taste tester, so we’ve made a ton of homemade dog treat recipes together over the years. But for her 10th adoptiversary (that makes her about 11 years old!), I wanted to make something extra special, a proper little birthday cake, just for her.

Why This Dog Birthday Cake Will Get Your Pup’s Tail Wagging

  • Made with wholesome ingredients: Banana, oat flour, natural peanut butter, and simple pantry staples.
  • Dog-approved: Chickpea is my official recipe tester, and judging by how quickly she polished off her slice, I’d say this one earned two paws up.
  • Easy to make: Which means you can whip it up for birthdays, gotcha days, or just to celebrate the very fact that your dog exists. (Totally worthy of celebration!)

Dog Birthday Cake Ingredients

For the Cake

  • Oat flour: For a cake that’s soft and easy to digest. You can make your own by blending rolled oats into a fine flour.
  • Baking powder: Helps the cake rise.
  • Ripe banana: For natural sweetness and moisture.
  • Natural peanut butter: Be sure the only ingredient is peanuts.
  • Water or unsweetened plant-based milk: To bring the batter together. If you use a plant-based milk, the best option is a simple unflavored/unsweetened one that doesn’t have a long list of ingredients.

For the Frosting

  • Natural peanut butter: Adds rich flavor and makes the frosting irresistible for dogs.
  • Unsweetened plant-based yogurt: For a smooth, spreadable frosting. Again, make sure the ingredient list is short, simple, and free of artificial sweeteners.
  • Optional decorations: Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, banana slices, grated carrot, dog treats, kibble.

How to Make a Dog Birthday Cake

Bowl of dog birthday cake batter.
  1. Make the Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the oat flour and baking powder. Mix in the mashed banana, peanut butter, and 4 tablespoons of water or plant-based milk. If needed, add 1 more tablespoon of liquid.

  1. Fill the Pan: Spread the batter evenly into two greased 4-inch cake pans, a 6- to 8-inch cake pan, or 4 to 6 muffin cups. The batter will be sticky and thick, so wetting your spatula can help smooth the top.

  1. Bake: Bake at 325ºF for 30 to 35 minutes, or until lightly golden around the edges and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely.

  1. Make the Frosting: In a small bowl, stir together the peanut butter and yogurt until smooth. If needed, add a teaspoon of water or plant milk to thin it slightly.

Tips and Variations

  • Use natural peanut butter: Always check the ingredient list and avoid added oils, sugars, and artificial sweeteners, especially xylitol.
  • Keep portions reasonable: This cake is a treat, not a meal, so serve small portions, depending on your dog’s size.
  • Swap out the yogurt: You can spread peanut butter on the cake as frosting or swap the yogurt for additional mashed banana.
  • Messy is cute: Don’t worry if this isn’t a picture-perfect bakery cake. Dogs don’t care if your frosting is perfectly smooth, they just care that it’s delicious. 😄

Wondering if this cake is safe for dogs? Yep! Every ingredient in this recipe is generally considered dog-friendly, but like any treat, it should be served in moderation. Always double-check that your peanut butter doesn’t contain xylitol (sometimes listed as birch sugar), which is toxic to dogs.

Storage

  • Refrigerator: Store leftover cake in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Freezer: Freeze frosted or unfrosted cake for up to 2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before serving.
